Adoption
We are always pleased to help families through the adoption process, and we strive to make it as smooth as possible while protecting the interests of our client and the child:
- If your child was adopted overseas, we can arrange a second adoption in the U.S. so that the child is recognized as a naturalized American citizen. We review all the paperwork to ensure that the first adoption and the domestic re-adoption were legal and properly processed.
- We also help stepparents formally adopt minor children (or adult children) from a new marriage, to make the blending of families "official," and to provide the stepchild with health insurance, child support and inheritance rights. If the other parent does not consent, we can initiate proceedings for termination of parental rights.
Juvenile Delinquency
Kids make mistakes. They should not have to pay for a bad choice for the rest of their lives. We represent minors in juvenile court proceedings, including detention hearings. Our typical clients are accused of minor offenses, such as vandalism, shoplifting, school fights, underage drinking or drug possession. Tab Burkhalter works to get charges dismissed or reduced, or argues for probation or deferred adjudication to avoid a black mark on the child's permanent record that would affect college entrance, employment or driving privileges.
